Spotlight on the 2015 European Audiologist of the YearHere at Hearlink, we celebrate all audiologists, all around the world. It’s only with a collaborative environment that we can learn, grow and finesse solutions for hearing loss- together as one team, with one goal.

That’s why we want to shed a spotlight on Herdis Menhardt, the European Audiologist of the Year for 2015. She works at HöR-AKUSTiK DöBLiNG and also won the 2015 Australian Audiologist of the Year honor. The unveiling and award ceremony took place back in October at the EUHA congress in Nuremberg, Germany.

“The Audiologist of the Year competition is the perfect way for patients to give something back to their hearing care professional, and thank them for their care and support. Every year we receive more and more hearing stories from across the continent, and it never ceases to amaze us how much of an impact these hearing doctors have on the lives of their patients – they are truly inspirational.

-Paula Brinson-Pyke, Marketing Director at Rayovac, one of the competitions founding partners

The European Audiologist of the Year is run as a collective partnership between the European Hearing Instrument Manufacturer’s Association, Audio Infos Magazine and Rayovac, which is a hearing aid battery manufacturer. The competition will be in its ninth year in 2016, and it truly shines a floodlight on the amazing work of hearing care professionals across the continent. 17 professionals in the audiology industry scour through thousands of submissions, and base their nomination on criteria including- commitment, knowledge, level of care and dedication.

Herdis received the nomination from one of her patient’s parents. The patient’s parent—Suzanne-- submitted her experience with Herdis as an honoring testament to the treatment that the patient’s son had undergone, and as a result, the profound impact that Herdis had had on each of their lives. When Suzanne’s son was first born, she and her husband were told that their son would likely never hear and would have to have cochlear implants surgically implanted. Herdis made sure that the implantation was as smooth and seamless as can be, and even managed all communication with the insurance providers. Suzanne knew that even when her son managed to lose or break one of his implants, she could depend on a same day appointment. To beat it all? Herdis made sure that Suzanne and the family were regularly educated on the hearing aid and audiology industries with invites to speaker sessions and industry tradeshows.

What set Herdis above and beyond the other candidates? That she made both the mental and physical wellbeings of everyone in her patient’s family, her priority, both in and outside of work.

“I’m really thrilled that Susanne nominated me for Audiologist of the Year, it’s been a pleasure to support her and her family through her son’s hearing difficulties and I’m delighted he is doing so well. Being an audiologist means I get to meet so many wonderful people every day and it really is a joy to see them thriving, winning this award is just the icing on the cake!”
