Spotlight on The Cochlear Kids- Liam the SuperheroHearlink loves to research and identify champions for the hearing impaired. Over time we’ve learned that they can be found absolutely everywhere, from the doctors who are executing amazing medical miracles, to the kind woman or man in the community who takes time out of his or her day to educate others about hearing impairments. We believe that absolutely anyone can be a champion for the hearing impaired, and that one of the greatest qualities that they can have, is the willingness to educate those around them. When our communities are properly educated about their hearing- how to value it, how to treat it, how to prolong it in its highest quality for the longest about of time, then they become allies to our business and to our mission. One of the most vulnerable audiences that we treat is our youngest patients. As if growing up isn’t hard enough, they need to navigate it missing one of their greatest assets, their hearing. So tools and resources to support our younger generations, are of particular inspiration to us. Today, we highlight one of these tools- a beautifully written book called The Cochlear Kids: Liam the Superhero.

The Cochlear Kids: Liam the Superhero, was released earlier this year and was written by Heidi Dredge. Heidi is a mother to a cochlear implant recipient, so she’s particularly aware of the challenges that her audiences faces. After her daughter received a cochlear implant as a young baby, Heidi found very few books available to teach her daughter about her hearing loss, and about how her cochlear implant makes her very special. She wanted to create a book that teaches families about the very many facets of hearing loss, from diagnosis and surgery to the activation of hearing aids and the importance and fun of speech therapy.

While this particular book focuses on Liam, Heidi has authored an entire series about, aptly, the Cochlear kids. Liam’s tale is the first of the series. It explains to readers just what a cochlear implant is and how exactly it works. It’s written in fun, rhyming prose, and is underscored with Liam’s favorite pastime, which is pretending to be a superhero. At the end of the book, readers are hopefully left with the message that we can all be superheroes if we listen to and follow our hearts.

She has aimed to design these books to be entertaining, uplifting and informative. Critics believe she’s hit the nail on the head and the book has received resounding positive praise. The next book in the series will be available for sale at the end of this year and will be titled Zara at the Zoo.
