Myth Buster! Tall Tales About Hearing Impairment

Wednesday, October 12, 2016 9:17:00 AM Australia/Melbourne

Working in the audiology industry, the Hearlink team gets a tonne of questions. These range from wanting to identify a hearing impairment issue and discussing treatment options, to outlandish rumors that our patients and customers have heard about hearing loss. We’re passionate about dispelling these. Part of the reason that many go untreated for health issues is that they’re afraid. Rumors and gossip serve as catalysts for this culture of fear. That’s why the Hearlink team will always be honest with you. It might always be the news that you want to hear, but it will always be the truth. In the spirit of being honest, today we walk through some of the most frequently heard myths about hearing impairments and what the truth may actually be.

Myth Buster! Tall Tales About Hearing ImpairmentFirst up to bat, and one the we hear quite often- Does wearing hearing aids solve anything? Or does it just create new issues for those impacted? Myth! Sure, there are many out there that may have issues with their hearing aids. This could be for a huge variety of reasons. They could have been improperly fitted, or chose a model which doesn’t tackle their exact hearing impairment. Additionally, they could be wearing a model that’s outdated so it doesn’t take advantage of the advances in technology that we see more and more of each day. Bottom line, see an expert. What works for your sister, brother, wife, friend, may not be the same thing that will work for you.

This is frequently followed by- Are hearing aids complicated to wear? Again, the above reasons are applicable for folks who do think that their hearing aids are complicated. Most important? The age. Hearing aid models are growing more and more simple every year, with added benefits to boot. Today you could source a device that adjusts volume all by itself, just by recognizing what’s going on around you. Maybe it’s just us, but we find hearing aids pretty exciting.

And finally for today- Are hearing aids too expensive for me? We reiterate this all the time, but we are so fortunate to live in a country with wonderful health insurance. Beyond that, the Hearlink team takes great pride in being very cognizant of your budget. There is never just one off the shelf option for anything to do with your health. Every one of our patients is unique and special and that means that a hearing aid or other solution should be just as unique and special. That being said, hearing aids are a financial investment, as would be any solution for your health. We hope that you feel comfortable having these types of discussions with your audiologist, so that you see as many options as possible that work for you.

Bottom line, we value communication with our patients and customers and want to ensure that you’re as comfortable as possible. Give us a shout, we’d love to hear from you.
