Loud noise damages hearing, even if it is ‘noise’ which is enjoyable. Musicians exposed to loud levels frequently run the same risk as a typical factory worker if the noise exposure is equivalent. Noise exposure is a function of level and duration of exposure to the noise.
We make custom made moulded ear plugs with special filter designed to attenuate sound equally across the frequency range so the tonal quality is not affected. A typical ‘solid’ ear plug without any filter will certainly protect but it attenuate the higher frequencies to a greater degree changing the tonal quality and also giving rise to the ‘occlusion effect’, feeling a blocked sensation and hearing own voice louder. The occlusion problem is even more significant for a singer who may have difficulty monitoring their voice.
